Completing The Program | CA DOJ Certification

Completing the training courses provided by The Alpha Group enables our students to receive formal credit and recognition from California State University, and from the internationally renowned Association of Law Enforcement Intelligence Units (LEIU).

Students may also be eligible to receive a certification certificate from the California Department of Justice. Click here to read the current conditions and requirements for California DOJ certification.

This program is designed to provide an academic training curriculum for both sworn and civilian law enforcement professionals. Completion requirements are shown below. The first set of requirements is for people who have NEVER DONE any type of crime or intelligence analysis work. The second set of requirements is for people who ARE DOING or HAVE DONE crime or intelligence analysis work. Most of the students who attend our courses are doing or have done crime or intelligence analysis work. As such, they typically follow the second set of requirements.

For people who have NEVER DONE any crime or intelligence analysis work in a law enforcement or related government agency or private sector enterprise (e.g., banks, insurance companies, major retailers, students, etc.).

You need to take and satisfactorily complete the coursework for the following Alpha Group courses, each of which is offered and presented in an in-person and/or online format as shown below:

  • Crime Analysis Applications – a 5-day, in-person class or 8-week online course

  • Criminal Intelligence and Analysis – a 5-day, in-person class or 8-week online course

  • Criminal Investigative Analysis – a 5-day, in person class or 8-week online course

  • Research Methods in Criminal Justice – a 6-week online course

You will also need to complete:

  • An Introduction to Criminal Justice (or sometimes called an Introduction to Law Enforcement) Course

  • An introduction to Criminal Law course applicable to the laws of the state, province or country in which you reside.

If you have already taken these two courses in college and passed with a grade of “C” or

better, your transcripts will satisfy these requirements.

You will also need to complete a 400-hour internship within a crime or intelligence analysis unit of a law enforcement agency working under the mentorship of a crime or intelligence analyst. This is to ensure that in addition to having taken the classes that you get some “real-world” experience under your belt before receiving your Certification. 400 hours is the equivalent of fifty 8-hour days. Upon the completion of the internship the mentoring crime or intelligence analyst will document the fact that you have satisfactorily completed your internship AND that you have satisfactorily demonstrated your ability to use at least the basic computer software typically used within a crime and/or intelligence analysts unit, which, in most cases, is the use of the Microsoft Office Suite that includes the Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint software programs. If you have had computer classes in college that you passed with a grade of “C” or better, your transcripts will also satisfy the computer proficiency requirement.

For people who ARE DOING or HAVE DONE crime or intelligence analysis work in a law enforcement agency.

Once you have worked as a crime or intelligence analyst for a law enforcement agency for a year or more, you would not need to complete the internship. Your on-the-job experience will meet that requirement. Additionally, EITHER the submission of your transcripts for the Introduction to Criminal Justice and Criminal Law courses (if you took those courses in college) OR A LETTER FROM YOUR SUPERVISOR, WRITTEN ON AGENCY LETTERHEAD, stating that in his or her opinion you have gained sufficient knowledge of the criminal justice system and criminal law as a result of your on-the-job work as you would have gained had you taken these courses in college, will also meet the Introduction to Criminal Justice and Introduction to Criminal Law requirements. A similar statement from your supervisor stating that you also have the requisite computer skills to perform competently on the job will also meet the computer proficiency requirement.

FOR EVERYONE: Students who successfully complete the requirements for each course they undertake can be awarded University Continuing Education Units (CEUs) from California State University. A modest registration fee made payable to the University is charged for this benefit.
